I double-dog-dare you to pick up the phone and call someone you haven’t talked to in years.
I recently reconnected with a dear friend of mine that I hadn’t laid eyes on for over 10 years. We met over 23 years ago when I was barely old enough to drink. He really wasn’t that much older…just a little more worldly…and funny!
The project we were assigned to lasted about three years, and then we continued to stay in touch for another five, until life got in the way. We had talked a couple of times and emailed a few more but, he’s a boy and I’m a girl so when serious relationships hit and children were born we drifted away.
Today was the day I got to see him again.
Eyeball to eyeball, face to face, cheek to cheek…
The sheer joy of seeing one of my best friends again was overwhelming…and, even more so because this visit was on borrowed time. You see, about eight years ago he should have died on the operating table from a congenital heart defect; the one that actually killed John Ritter.
But my friend didn’t die. He SURVIVED!
And I’ll tell you what, I am so glad he did. We had the best time, laughing, reminiscing and catching up. My life today might not have realized the true loss had he not survived back then, but spending the couple of hours with him today reminded me of all the rich gifts he had bestowed upon my life.
The colorful stories I tell, until my children’s eyes roll to the back or their heads, are usually laced with episodes involving this friend.
So, back to the Double-Dog-Dare…
Who’s the one person…you know…that one, that if you could, you would, call up right now and howl at the moon with? Would you let them know how much they rocked your world? Would you let them know how glad you are that they are still here?

I once got in contact with an old friend of mine. Once we were done catching up though, we realized we were just two totally different people and the friendship fizzled out again. No harm though- it was awesome to catch up with her and I don’t have any sadness that we aren’t continuing our friendship. I’m so happy to hear you were able to reconnect with your friend though! 🙂
There’s a lot to be said for closure, right? I’ve had that happen too.
Are you feeling back in the pink or are you still under the weather?
Closure was nice, yes!
I’d say I’m 50/50 on feeling better. Nothing a hot toddy won’t fix tonight 🙂
I love hot toddies! Feel better. I look forward to reading more of your posts!
Wow! Great blog post! Keep them coming!
Thanks for stopping by! I peeked at your blog, and look forward to strolling through your posts!
Seriously? Two days in a row, you’ve nailed my self-work. 🙂 I was just thinking about an old friend on the way home from the store tonight. Wasn’t planning to call – just sending her some good vibes – and still don’t want to, but I guess, since you double dog dared me!
Get on it girl!
Yes! Thank you for sharing this. Too often we get “busy” and don’t keep in touch with those that really matter. I’m guilty too. Love this awesome reminder…well actually double dog dare!
Friends are amazing…Memories are wonderful and combined they are the fabric of our lives….(I think that’s the start of an ad but oh well!)
